Delivered in a Covid-safe manner, Jason Asbell (Filmmaker/Programming Director for The Civic Theatre) will team up with a youth mentor, to be online teaching guides through the wonderful world of shooting analogue Super 8 film. Following the online workshop, each participant will be provided a Super 8 camera and one 50′ roll of black-and-white film (3.5 mins run time), to create an in-camera edited, silent black-and-white film over the course of 24-hours.
In staggered slots in a well-distanced outdoor work area, student filmmakers will learn how to make a safe homemade film processor, “Caffenol-C”, from instant coffee, vitamin C powder and washing soda. Each participant will then hand process their own Super 8 films.
All the final films will be transferred to digital format for an online public screening, to be seen for the first time by audience and filmmaker alike. The Civic Theatre also plans to play these films at various outdoor screenings.
